Rukmini Swayamvar

(e-Content developed by Prof. (Dr) Nitin Jarandikar)

 Introduction:

The Rukmini Swayamvar episode is one of the best literary examples of the Sgara rasa. It depicts the emotion of love, beauty, and attraction.

The story of Rukmini Swayamvar comes from the Bhāgavata Purāa.
It narrates how Lord Krishna marries Princess Rukmini. It is one of the most beautiful love stories in Indian mythology.

The Background:

Rukmini, the princess of Vidarbha, had heard many tales of Krishna’s valour, kindness, and divine charm. Without ever meeting him, she developed deep love and devotion for him. She considered him her rightful husband.

However, her brother Rukmi was politically motivated.
He wanted to marry her off to Shishupala who was a friend of the Kauravas. Though her parents were sympathetic toward her, they were helpless before Rukmi’s insistence.

Rukmini’s Letter to Krishna:

On the eve of her proposed marriage, Rukmini secretly sent a message to Krishna. In her letter, she confessed her love for him. She requested Krishna to come to Vidarbha and take her with him.

Krishna’s Arrival in Vidarbha:

After reading her message, Krishna comes to Vidarbha with his brother Balarama. Shishupala, Jarasandha, and other kings had gathered there with their armies for the ceremony. Rukmini, filled with anxiety and faith, went to the temple to pray to the goddess.

The Abduction:

As Rukmini came out of the temple, Krishna suddenly appeared in his chariot. He lifted her gently and placed her beside him. Before anyone could react, Krishna drove away swiftly.

Soon, the other kings and Rukmi’s soldiers gave chase. A fierce battle followed in which Balarama defeated the enemy forces. Krishna spared Rukmi’s life but humiliated him by cutting his hair.

Rukmini Swayamwar:

Krishna took Rukmini to Dwaraka, where they were married in a grand ceremony. The gods and sages blessed the couple, and Rukmini became Krishna’s chief queen.

The Rukmini Swayamvar and the Sgara rasa:

Rukmini’s love for Krishna: Rukmini falls in love with Krishna after hearing about his virtues and seeing his image in her mind. Though they have not met, her heart is completely devoted to him. Her longing, restlessness, and faithful love create the mood of divine romantic yearning, a hallmark of Sgara rasa.

Rukmini’s secret letter to Krishna: Rukmini’s secret letter to Krishna reveals her intense emotional desire and delicate modesty. She expresses her wish to be united with him while maintaining the purity and dignity of love — thus blending bhakti (devotion) and romantic passion.

Rukmini’s abduction: When Krishna arrives and carries Rukmini away in his chariot, the scene becomes charged with Sgara. The triumph of love over social barriers and the visual beauty of the moment evoke joy, admiration, and fulfilment.

Rukmini’s beauty: The descriptions of Rukmini’s beauty, her bridal attire, her emotions of fear, hope, and excitement — all create visual and emotional appeal that arouses the rasa of love in readers or listeners.
