कॅथरीन मॅन्सफिल्ड (Katherine Mansfield) या न्युझीलंडमधील लेखिका आहे. ‘अ कप ऑफ टी’ ही त्यांची एक गाजलेली कथा आहे. समाजातील गरीब-श्रीमंत वर्गातील दरी, श्रीमंत वर्गाचा खोटेपणा आणि स्त्रीसुलभ मत्सर (jealousy) याबद्दल या कथेतून भाष्य करण्यात आले आहे.

      रोझमेरी फेल ही या कथेची नायिका आहे. ती तरुण आहे. ती दिसायला फारशी सुंदर नसली तरी, ती अतिशय हुशार आणि कमालीची आधुनिक आहे. तिला वाचनाची आवड आहे. दोन वर्षापूर्वी तिचे लग्न झाले आहे. तिच्या नवऱ्याचे नाव फिलीप (Philip) असे आहे. तो अतिशय देखणा आणि रुबाबदार आहे. लेखिकेने त्याचे वर्णन “a duck of boy” असे केलेले आहे. हे दाम्पत्य अतिशय श्रीमंत आहे. हे इतके श्रीमंत आहेत की रोझमेरीने जर मनात आणले तर ती नुसती खरेदी करण्यासाठी पॅरीसला जाऊ शकते.

      एका हिवाळ्यात दुपारच्या वेळी रोझमेरी शॉपिंगसाठी बाहेर पडते. ती तिच्या कर्झन स्ट्रीटवरील (Curzon Street) नेहमीच्या जुन्या वस्तूंची विक्री करणाऱ्या दुकानात (antique shop) येते. यावेळी दुकानदार तिला एक छोटीशी डबी (a little box) दाखवतो. दुकानदाराने आत्तापर्यंत ही डबी अनमोल असल्याने कोणालाच दाखवलेली नाही. त्या छोट्या डबीवर एक सुंदर चित्र कोरलेले आहे. त्यावर एक तरुण आणि तरुणी आहे. तो तरुण एका बहर आलेल्या झाडाखाली उभा आहे आणि तरुणीने आपले हात त्याच्या गळ्यात टाकलेले आहेत. तरुणीने एक टोपी घातलेली आहे. तिच्या ड्रेसवर फुले आहेत. टोपीला हिरव्या रंगाच्या रिबन्स (ribbons) आहेत. आणि त्या दोघांच्या डोक्यावर गुलाबी रंगातील एक पंख असलेला देवदूत (pink cherub) उभा आहे. हे एवढे सगळे कोरीवकाम त्या डबीच्या टोपणावर केलेले आहे. या डबीची किंमत दुकानदार २८ गिनीज (28 guineas) असल्याचे सांगतो. रोझमेरीला डबी आवडते, परंतु एका छोट्या डबीची तिला किंमत जास्त वाटते. ती दुकानदाराला डबी तिच्यासाठी बाजूला ठेवायला सांगते आणि दुकानातून बाहेर पडते.

      बाहेर पाऊस पडत असतो. कडाक्याची थंडी पडलेली असते. आपल्या गाडीची वाट पहात असताना रोझमेरीला एक तिच्याच वयाची मुलगी भेटते. ती सडपातळ आणि सावळ्या रंगाची (thin, dark young girl) असून अतिशय गरीब आहे. ती रोझमेरीकडे चहासाठी पैशाची मागणी करते. रोझमेरी क्षणभर विचार करते आणि तिला आपल्याबरोबर घरी चहा घेण्यासाठी बोलावते. यामागे रोझमेरीला तिची कणव आलेली नसून तिला हा अनुभव म्हणजे एक साहसी कृत्य (adventure) वाटते, एखाद्या कादंबरीतील प्रसंगासारखे वाटते. शिवाय तिला हा अनुभव तिच्या पार्ट्यांमध्ये रंगवून रंगवून सांगायचा आहे. त्या मुलीला प्रथम असे वाटते की रोझमेरी आपल्याला पोलिसांच्या ताब्यात देईल. पण रोझमेरी तिला आपला तसला काही उद्देश नसल्याचे सांगते. मुलीचा तिच्यावर विश्वास बसतो आणि ती रोझमेरीच्या गाडीत बसून तिच्या प्रशस्त बंगल्यामध्ये कपभर चहा पिण्यासाठी येते. तिचा बंगला पाहून ती मुलगी भांबावून जाते. हे पाहून रोझमेरी आतून खूप खुश होते. आता हिला जेवायला पण थांबवायचे असा आता ती विचार करू लागते.

      ती मुलगी चहा पित असतानाच रोझमेरीचा नवरा (फिलीप) येतो. अनोळख्या मुलीकडे पाहून तो गोंधळून जातो. तो तिचे नाव विचारतो. ती आपले नाव मिस स्मिथ (Miss Smith) असल्याचे सांगते. फिलीप रोझमेरीला आपल्यासोबत त्यांच्या घरातील लायब्ररीमध्ये चलण्याची विनंती करतो. तिथे तो रोझमेरीला हा काय प्रकार असल्याचे विचारतो. त्यावर रोझमेरी सगळी हकीकत त्याला सांगते. कथा-कादंबऱ्यामध्येदेखील असंच घडते, असे ती फिलीपला सांगते.

      याठिकाणी आता गोष्टीला कलाटणी (twist) मिळते. इथे फिलीप रोझमेरीला सांगतो की तू वेडी (mad) आहेस, आणि तू म्हणतेस तसे काही काही घडणे शक्य नाही. रोझमेरी म्हणते मला ठाऊक होतं की तू असेच काहीसं बोलणार. तर फिलीप पटकन म्हणतो की अगं पण ती किती सुंदर आहे (“astonishingly pretty!...absolutely lovely!”). तिला बघून मी अगदी चकित झालो (“bowled over”).  आता ही गोष्ट रोझमेरीच्या काही ध्यानातच आली नव्हती. आपला नवरा एका दुसऱ्या मुलीचे कौतुक करतोय म्हटल्याबरोबर रोझमेरीचा मत्सर जागा होतो. फिलीप तिला विचारतो की मिस स्मिथ जेवायलापण थांबेल का? खरेतर रोझमेरी तिला जेवायलाच थांबवणार होती. पण फिलीपकडून असे कौतुक झाल्याने, रोझमेरीचा अगदी जळफळाट होतो. पटकन ती आपल्या खोलीमध्ये जाते. पहिल्यांदा चेकबुक (cheque book) हातात घेते. मग विचार करते चेक कशाला द्यायला हवा? मग ती पाच पाऊंडच्या (5 pounds) नोटा काढते. पण पुन्हा मग त्यातल्या दोन ठेवून देते आणि मिस स्मिथकडे जाते.

      एक अर्ध्या तासाने रोझमेरी पुन्हा लायब्ररीमध्ये जाते. फिलीप तिथेच बसलेला असतो. रोझमेरीने आता थोडा मेकअपदेखील केलेला आहे, गळ्यात मोत्याची माळ घातलेली आहे. मिस स्मिथ जेवायला थांबायला तयार नसल्याचे ती फिलिपला सांगते. जाण्याचा हट्ट केल्याने मिस स्मिथला थोडे पैसे देऊन जाऊ दिल्याचेही ती सांगते. एवढे बोलून ती फिलिपला पटकन मी तुला आवडते का म्हणून विचारते. फिलीप तिला भयानक आवडत असल्याचे सांगतो (“I like you awfully”). मग ती हळूच दुकानात पाहिलेल्या डबीबद्दल सांगते. डबीची किंमत सांगून ती मी विकत घेऊ का असे विचारते. यालाही फिलीप पटकन होकार देतो. आणि मग इतका वेळ मनात खदखदणारा प्रश्न ती फिलिपला विचारते, “मी सुंदर आहे ना?” (“am I pretty?”) आणि इथेच गोष्ट संपते.

          Rosemary Fell is a main character in ‘A Cup of Tea’. The story is written by Katherine Mansfield. Rosemary is a young woman. She is not beautiful. But she is brilliant and modern. She is a well-read person. She is married to Philip two years ago. She is very rich. She could go to Paris to buy a thing.

Rosemary Fell meets a young lady in the street. Her name is Miss Smith. She is very poor. She asks Rosemary for money so that she can have a cup of tea. It is very cold outside. Rosemary considers it as an adventure. She wants to tell the story in her party. She impresses Smith with her car, bungalow. But when Mr.  Philip looks at Miss Smith, he is impressed by her beauty. He tells Rosemary that she is astonishingly pretty. So, Rosemary feels jealous of Miss Smith. She wanted to ask Miss Smith about dinner. But now she has changed her mind. She gives some money to Miss Smith and says goodbye.

        In this way, through the character of Rosemary, the writer has commented on the rich-poor class divide, the hypocrisy of the rich class and the instinct of jealousy.

        Once Rosemary visits a shop. Antique things are sold in this shop. Rosemary is a regular customer of this shop. This time the shopkeeper shows her one little box. It is a shiny metal box. There is beautiful carving on the lid of the box. There are two young people on it. The young man is standing under a tree. The young lady is standing behind him. The lady had put her arms around the neck of the young man. The lady is wearing a hat. The hat has green ribbons. There are flowers on her dress. Rosemary loves this little box. The price of the box is 28 guineas.

 Q. 3) How does Katherine Mansfield explore the theme of 'class difference' (गरीब-श्रीमंत भेदभाव) in “A Cup of Tea”?

Introduction:

Katherine Mansfield’s short story A Cup of Tea is a sharp social commentary (कठोर सामाजिक भाष्य) on the gap between the rich upper class and the poor lower class in the society. Through her characters and situations, Mansfield exposes how class difference that shapes human relationships and attitudes.

Rosemary Fell

Rosemary Fell is presented as a wealthy, fashionable woman. She lives in luxury. She buys expensive items, visits shops, and collects rare things (दुर्मिळ वस्तू) which are very costly. Her lifestyle reflects the power and superficiality (खोटेपणा) of the upper classes, who are unknown about the harsh realities of poverty. So, when Miss Smith approaches her for money, Rosemary considers it as an adventure. She does not look at it as a serious moral or social issue.

Miss Smith

Miss Smith is a poor young woman. She needs money to buy a cup of tea. Her hunger and manner are in contrast to Rosemary’s richness. Mansfield presents Miss Smith as a symbol of the struggling lower class, whose survival (जगण्याची धडपड) depends on small acts of charity (मदत/उपकार) from the rich.

The Illusion of Charity (मदतीचा आभास)

Rosemary appears generous (परोपकारी) when she takes Miss Smith home. However, her charity is not motivated by sympathy (दयाभाव), but by a desire for self-satisfaction (स्वतःचे सुख). She wants to feel adventurous and superior by “helping” the poor girl. This shows how the upper classes often view charity as a form of self-display, not genuine empathy.

Jealousy and Insecurity (मत्सर आणि असुरक्षितता)

The turning point in the story comes when Philip, Rosemary’s husband, casually remarks that Miss Smith is “astonishingly pretty! ...absolutely lovely!” Rosemary instantly becomes jealous and insecure. Instead of continuing her “good deed,” she sends Miss Smith away with some money. This reveals that her class privilege (विशेष दर्जा) is false. Her interest in Miss Smith disappears once her own superiority feels threatened.

Mansfield’s Social Analysis

Mansfield uses irony (उपरोध) to criticize the shallowness (उथळपणा) of the upper class. Rosemary’s so-called generosity (उपकार करण्याची भावना) is exposed as hollow (पोकळ/खोटी), and Miss Smith’s poverty remains unchanged.

The story reflects how the rich use encounters with the poor to support their own sense of power, while ignoring the deeper inequalities of society.

Conclusion

Through the contrast between Rosemary and Miss Smith, Katherine Mansfield highlights the social gap (सामाजिक दरी) between rich and poor. The story shows that class difference is not just about money, but also about attitudes, insecurities, and moral emptiness. ‘The Model Millionaire’

‘द मॉडेल मिलियनेअर’ (‘The Model Millionaire’ /आदर्श लखपती) ही कथा ऑस्कर वाइल्ड (Oscar Wilde) या लेखकाने लिहिलेली आहे. कोणताही हेतू न बाळगता चांगल्या मनाने केलेली मदत ही अनमोल कशी असते, याविषयीची ही गोष्ट आहे. या गोष्टीमध्ये पुढील पात्रे आहेत :

१.       ह्युई अर्सकाईन (Hughie Erskine): हा या कथेचा नायक आहे.

२.       अॅलन ट्रेव्हर (Alan Trevor): हा एक चित्रकार आणि ह्युईचा मित्र आहे.

३.       बॅरन हाऊजबर्ग (Baron Hausberg): हा अॅलन ट्रेव्हरसाठी मॉडेल म्हणून काम करतो आहे.

४.       लॉरा मेर्टन (Laura Merton): ही ह्युईची प्रेयसी आहे.

ही कथा लंडन शहरामध्ये घडते. ह्युई अर्सकाईन हा एक तरुण आणि रुबाबदार युवक आहे. त्याचे वर्णन पुढीलप्रमाणे केलेले आहे : 1. wonderfully good looking; 2. crisp brown hair; 3. clear-cut profile; 4. grey eyes. त्याच्या वडलांनी त्यांच्या पश्चात आपल्या मुलासाठी पुढील गोष्टी सोडलेल्या आहेत : १. तलवार (a sword); 2. इतिहासावरील पुस्तके (‘History of Peninsular War’ या पुस्तकाचे १५ खंड). या दोन्ही गोष्टी ह्युईच्या उपयोगाच्या नाहीत. त्याची आर्थिक परिस्थिती फारशी चांगली नाही. त्याची एक मावशी (aunt) त्याला वर्षाकाठी २०० पाऊंड देते. त्यावर त्याची गुजराण होते. पोटापाण्यासाठी त्याने अनेक उद्योग केलेले आहेत. ते पुढीलप्रमाणे : १. स्टॉक मार्केट (stock market); २. चहाचा व्यवसाय (tea merchant); ३. मद्यविक्री (selling dry sherry). परंतु सगळीकडे त्याला अपयश आलेले आहे.

तो एका मुलीच्या प्रेमात पडलेला आहे. तिचे नाव लॉरा मेर्टन आहे. लॉराचे वडील हे कर्नल (Colonel) आहेत. त्यांनी ह्युईला एक अट घातलेली आहे. ज्यावेळी ह्युईकडे दहा हजार पाऊंड जमा होतील, त्यावेळी ते या लग्नाबाबत विचार करतील. त्यामुळे ह्युई हताश झालेला आहे. कुठून जमा करणार तो एवढी मोठी रक्कम?

एके दिवशी तो फिरत-फिरत अॅलन ट्रेव्हर या मित्राकडे येतो. तो तेथे पाहतो की अॅलन एका मॉडेलचे चित्र काढण्यात गुंग झालेला आहे. अॅलन त्याचे स्वागत करतो. त्या मॉडेलला पाहून ह्युईला धक्का बसतो. कारण ते मॉडेल म्हणजे एक अतिशय गरीब भिकारी (beggar) असतो. तो एक म्हातारा गृहस्थ असतो. त्याचे कपडे फाटलेले (tears and tatters) असतात. बूट खराब झालेले असतात. चेहरा दीनवाणा असतो. आणि आपली टोपी त्याने भिक मागण्यासाठी पुढे केलेली असते. त्या भिकाऱ्याकडे पाहून ह्युईला कणव येते. ह्युई अॅलनला विचारतो की या भिकाऱ्याला मॉडेल म्हणून किती पैसे मिळतील? अॅलन म्हणतो की तासाला एक शिलिंग (shilling). तर त्याच्या चित्राचे अॅलनला दोन हजार गिनीज (guineas) मिळणार असतात. त्या भिकाऱ्याबद्दल अतिशय वाईट वाटल्याने ह्युई त्याला अॅलनच्या माघारी आपल्याकडील सॉव्हेरीन कॉईन (sovereign coin—एक नाणे) काढून देतो आणि निघून जातो.

त्या रात्री ह्युई ११.०० वाजता अॅलनला एका क्लबमध्ये भेटतो. ह्युई त्याला चित्राबद्दल विचारतो. अॅलन चित्र पूर्ण झाल्याचे त्याला सांगतो आणि त्या मॉडेलला ह्युईबद्दल विशेष आस्था वाटल्याचेही सांगतो. त्यामुळे अॅलन ह्युईबद्दलचा सर्व तपशील त्याला सांगून टाकतो. लॉरा आणि दहा हजार पाऊंडबद्दलदेखील तो त्या मॉडेलला सर्व काही सांगून टाकतो. यावरती आपली सर्व माहिती त्या भिकाऱ्याला सांगून टाकल्याबद्दल ह्युई अॅलनवर उखडतो.    

यावर अॅलन जे काही सांगतो ते ऐकून ह्युई चकित होतो. अॅलन त्याला सांगतो की ज्याला तू भिकारी समजतोस त्याचे नाव बॅरन हाऊजबर्ग असे असून तो खरे तर पूर्ण युरोपमधील एक सर्वात श्रीमंत गृहस्थ आहे. त्याने मनात आणले तर तो सगळे लंडन शहर विकत घेऊ शकतो. प्रत्येक महत्त्वाच्या शहरामध्ये त्याची प्रॉपर्टी आहे. तो सोन्याच्या ताटामध्ये जेवतो.

हे ऐकल्यावर ह्युईला धक्का बसतो आणि तो अॅलनला म्हणतो की आणि अशा एका श्रीमंत माणसाला मी एक सॉव्हेरीन कॉईन देऊ केले. अॅलनला ही घटना माहित नसल्याने तोही चकित होतो. ह्युई स्वतःला बोल देऊ लागतो. यावर अॅलन त्याची समजूत काढतो की बॅरन हाऊजबर्ग त्याचे पैसे योग्य ठिकाणी गुंतवेल आणि दर सहा महिन्यांनी त्याचे व्याज ह्युईला देऊन टाकेल.

दुसरे दिवशी बॅरन हाऊजबर्ग यांचेकडून एक वृद्ध गृहस्थ ह्युईकडे येतात आणि एक लखोटा देतात. त्यामध्ये दहा हजार पाऊंडचा एक चेक आणि एक पत्र असते. “एका म्हाताऱ्या भिकाऱ्याकडून ह्युई आणि लॉरा यांच्या लग्नाची भेट” असे पत्रामध्ये लिहिलेले असते.

अशा प्रकारे ह्युईला दहा हजार पाऊंड रक्कम मिळते आणि त्याचे लॉरासोबत लग्न होते. लग्नामध्ये अॅलन आणि बॅरन हाऊजबर्ग स्वतः हजर राहतात. यावेळी अॅलन पुढील उद्गार काढतो :“Millionaire models are rare enough, but model millionaires are rare still.”

म्हणजेच लखपती असणारी व्यक्ती मॉडेल म्हणून क्वचित दिसते. तर एक आदर्श, सर्वगुणसंपन्न असून लखपती असणारी व्यक्ती त्याहून क्वचित दिसते.

But he is a poor fellow. His father had left him only two things – a sword and a 15-volume book on history. He had tried his luck in many businesses.  He had tried in stock market, tried as a tea merchant, tried to sell dry sherry. But in every business, he failed. His aunt gives him 200 pounds every year. That is his only source of income. He is fallen in love with Laura Merton. But Laura’s father is against this marriage. He has asked Hughie to collect ten thousand pounds to marry Laura. But Hughie is a sensible person. When he looks at one beggar in his friend’s studio, feels pity for him and gives him a sovereign coin. Hughie’s this help changes his life altogether.

The name of the beggar is Baron Hausberg. He is a character from the story ‘The Model Millionaire’. The story is written by Oscar Wilde. The beggar works as a model for the painter Alan. The beggar is an old man. His face is wrinkled. His clothes are dirty and torn. His boots were patched. He has held hat for alms. For the modelling, he gets one shilling per hour. But in reality, the beggar is a very rich man. He could buy the city of London. He eats in golden plate. He has property in every main city.

Q. 3 Discuss the end of story ‘Model Millionaire’.

Hughie Erskine is a main character in the story ‘The Model Millionaire’. He is very handsome, but poor. He loves a girl named Laura. But Laura’s father has asked Hughie to collect ten thousand pounds to marry Laura.  Hughie knows that it is an impossible task. At his friend’s studio, he sees one beggar. His friend is using the beggar as his model. Looking at the condition of the beggar, Hughie feels pity for him. He gives him one coin and leaves. But Hughie doesn’t know that the beggar is actually a very rich man. His name is Baron Hausberg. Baron Hausberg likes the sensible personality of Hughie. From the painter, he comes to know about Hughie and Laura. The next morning, he sends a cheque of ten thousand pounds to Hughie.  And finally, Hughie marries with Laura.
