  Rabindranath Tagore: He is an important Indian English poet and dramatist. He is a bilingual poet. He wrote in Bengali and English. He is the only Indian to receive the prestigious Nobel Prize for literature. He received the prize for the poetry collection ‘Geetanjali’. He has written the national anthem of India (‘Jan gan man’).

2.   Nissim Ezekiel: He is an important Indian English poet writing in post-Independence India. Ezekiel wrote about the life of an ordinary Indian. He used Indian speech patterns (“Indian English”) to show the Indian way of thinking and speaking. His poem “Very Indian Poems in Indian English” is a famous example. 

3.   Dilip Chitre: He is an important Indian English poet writing in post-Independence India. He wrote in Marathi as well as in English. He translated Saint Tukaram and Saint Dnyaneshwar into English.

4.   ‘Nightingale of India’: Sarojini Naidu is very fondly known as the ‘nightingale of India’. She is an important Indian English poet. She was a freedom fighter. Because of colourful imagery and lyrical quality of her poems, Mahatma Gandhi called her the ‘Nightingale of India’.

5.   Sri Aurbindo: Sri Aurbindo is an important Indian English poet. He was a freedom fighter. His poetry blended Indian myths and the contemporary issue. ‘Savitri’ is his significant epic poem. In his later life he turned to spiritualism.

6.   Mamta Kalia: Mamta Kalia is a significant poet writing in post-Independence India. She writes in Hindi and English. She is known for the realistic portrayal of women and the middle-class society.

7.   Bilingualism: Bilingualism means knowing two different languages. Bilingualism is an important feature of Indian literature. A poet like Rabindranath Tagore wrote in Bengali as well as English. Dilip Chitre and Arun Kolatkar are the poets who wrote in Marathi as well as English.

8.    Dharmaveer Bharati: Dharmaveer Bharati is an important Hindi poet and playwright writing in post-independent India. Violence, moral decay and human values are the main themes of his literature. ‘Andha Yug’ is his famous play based on the last days of the Mahabharata war.

9.   Vijay Tendulkar: Vijay Tendulkar is an important playwright from Marathi writing in the post-Independent India.  His plays are translated into English. His plays deal with man’s inner violence. ‘Ghashiram Kotawal’, ‘Silence! The Court is in Session’ are his important plays.

10.               Girish Karnad: Girish Karnad is an important Kannada playwright. His plays are translated into English. He uses myths, folktales and history and reinterprets them from present perspective. ‘Tughlaq’, ‘Hayavadana’ are his important plays.
