The Selfish Giant – Oscar Wilde
·
The story “The
Selfish Giant” (“स्वार्थी
राक्षस”) is written by Oscar
Wilde.
·
The selfish
Giant used to live in one castle (किल्ला).
·
Once the Giant went to meet his friend the Cornish ogre (Cornish: कॉर्नवॉल
प्रदेशातील) (ogre: माणसे खाणारा दुष्ट राक्षस).
·
The Giant lived there with his friend for seven years.
·
Meanwhile,
every afternoon, the children used to play in the Giant’s garden. There were twelve
peach-trees in the garden.
·
After returning
to the castle, the Giant saw children playing in his garden and became very
angry.
·
He built a
high wall around the garden and put up a notice board: TRESPASSERS WILL BE
PROSECUTED (बेकायदेशीर प्रवेश
करणाऱ्यांवर कारवाई केली जाईल).
·
The poor
children had no other place to play. They would always talk about their happy
days in the lovely garden.
·
That year, the
spring season (वसंत ऋतू) did not come to the
garden of the selfish Giant.
·
Snow (बर्फ), Frost (गोठलेले दव), North Wind (उत्तरेकडील घोंघावणारा
वारा), Hail (गारा) stay permanently in the garden of the selfish
Giant.
·
The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak. (cloak: अंगरखा)
·
The Frost painted all the trees silver.
·
North Wind was wrapped in furs and roared all day around the
garden.
·
Every day for
three hours the Hail rattled on the roof of the castle.
·
One morning,
the selfish Giant listens to some lovely music.
It is the sound of one little linnet. (linnet: एक पक्षी)
·
The selfish
Giant sees children creeping through a hole in the wall, and playing in the
garden. (to creep: सरपटत येणे)
·
Spring arrives in the garden with the arrival of
children.
·
In the
farthest corner of the garden, the Giant sees one little boy who was
crying bitterly because he was unable to climb the
tree.
·
Looking at
this scene, the heart of the Giant melts. (to melt: द्रवणे/विरघळणे) He helps the child to climb the tree.
·
The Giant
never sees that little boy again; the Giant is curious to meet the boy; he
keeps waiting for him.
·
Years pass,
the Giant becomes very old, and one day he finds the little boy in the garden.
·
The selfish
Giant finds the prints of two nails on his palms and little feet. (nails: खिळे; palms: तळहात)
·
Looking at
this, the Giant becomes angry; the little boy tells him that these are the
wounds of love. (wounds: जखमा)
·
The little boy
tells him that once you allowed me to play in your garden, today I will take
you to my garden which is Paradise (स्वर्ग).
·
In the
afternoon when the children ran in the garden, they find the Giant lying dead
under the tree, all covered with white blossoms. (blossoms: फुलांचा बहर)
