Eight Rupees

'एट रूपीज' ही कथा मुरली दास मेलवाणी (Murali Das Melwani) या लेखकाने लिहिलेली आहे. सोळा वर्षाचा एक मुलगा हा या कथेचा नायक अहि, बूट पॉलिश करणे हा त्याचा व्यवसाय आहे. एके दिवशी सकाळी ९.०० च्या सुमारास तो एका उंच मजली इमारतीमध्ये शिरतो. एका घरावरील भलीमोठी नावाची पाटी पाहून तो त्या घराबाहेर घरमालकाची वाट पहात उभा राहतो. घरमालक बाहेर आल्यानंतर तो त्याला बूट पॉलिशबद्दल विचारतो. पण घरमालक साफ नकार देतो. मुलगा त्याला निम्म्या पैशात पॉलिश करून देण्यास तयार होतो. घरमालक नाखुषीने याला तयार होतो. पाय ठेवण्यासाठी तो मुलाला 'फूटरेस्ट'बद्दल (footrest) विचारतो, पण आपल्याकडे फूटरेस्ट नसल्याचे सांगत मुलगा त्याला त्याचा बूट घातलेला पाय आपल्या मांडीवर ठेवण्यास सांगतो. याचवेळी तो घरमालकाला पैसे वाचवून आपण एक नवीन फूटरेस्ट विकत घेणार असल्याचे सांगतो.

कणव येऊन घरमालक त्याला त्याच्या घरच्या परिस्थितीबद्दल विचारतो. तर आपले वडील सहा महिन्यापूर्वी घर सोडून गेल्याचे मुलगा सांगतो. तसेच घरी बहीणी असून त्यांच्या लग्नाचीही जबाबदारी आपल्यावर असल्याचे तो सांगतो. यावेळी घरमालक त्याला फुटरेस्टची किंमत विचारतो. यावरती रेडीमेड फूटरेस्टची किंमत सहा रुपये, तर ऑर्डर देउन बनवून घेतल्यास आठ रुपये किंमत असल्याचे मुलगा सांगतो.

पॉलिशचे काम पूर्ण झाल्यावर मुलगा घरमालकाकडे आठ रुपये उधार मागलो. दया वाटल्याने घरमालक त्याला आठ रुपये फूटरेस्टचे आणि पॉलिशचे पंचवीस पैसे देतो, तसेच पैसे जमतील तेव्हा परत करण्याचेही सांगतो. एका गरजू मुलाला मदत केल्याचे घरमालकाला समाधान मिळते.

पैसे घेऊन पायऱ्या उत्तरताना मुलाच्या मनात विचार सुरू होतात. काल त्याला अशाच पद्धतीने दिवसभरात एकूण ६४ रुपये मिळाले होते. आज दिवसाची सुरुवात चांगली झाल्याने यापेक्षाही आपणाला अधिक पैसे मिळतील. या विचाराने मुलगा खूश होतो. अशा प्रकारे मुलगा एक उत्तम आणि निष्णात विक्रेता असल्याचे कथेच्या शेवटी समजून येते.

According to him, due to this technique, he gets more customers. He grabs sympathy, by telling the customers about the disappearance of his father and the responsibility of his sisters. All these tricks make the boy a clever salesperson.

The rich man feels happy that he has helped a poor boy, But the shoe- Polish boy has already earned sixty-four rupees yesterday using the same technique. And now he is expecting to earn more amount today than yesterday. In this way, at the end of the story, it becomes clear that the shoe-polish boy is a clever and smart salesperson.
